Mr. Rooney’s Workplace Wellness Tip
– Don’t Stress In Unstressful Moments

by Mr. Art “The Chief” Rooney

As Vice-president of security for Sandra Larkin Wellness Strategies, LLC, I am on call 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.  At a moments notice, I am needed to spring into action to provide protection and security intervention.  So how do I keep my stress level to a minimum even though I need constant heightened awareness?

Tip:  Don’t stress in unstressful moments – Every day we are placed or place ourselves in stressful situations.  The key to remaining even is to purposefully take the stress out of unstressful moments.  As we all know, stress will come our way soon enough so learn to relax when stress is not your partner for the day.

So how do we do it :

1.       Breathe deeply allowing oxygen to enter your blood stream.  Studies show that deep breathing from the diaphragm lowers stress levels and blood pressure.

2.       In between meetings or during the day, think (meditate) on something pleasant not related to work.  Pick a place in your office (even in the restroom) or outside the immediate building to escape and train your mind to live in the positive for a few moments.

3.       Close your eyes to the world and your surroundings.  This provides a natural escape hatch as you are not looking at your cubicle or computer monitor.

4.       Be aware that when we continually live in “fight and flight moments” we increase our risk of health complications that we cannot see from the inside out.

5.       Affirm yourself, why you are there and what your next goal is.  Stress sometimes takes us to a place where we doubt everything about ourselves. Stop this before it turns toxic.

When it comes to stress be more like the willow tree than the oak.  Become flexible and relax when a situation does not call for stress.  On the other hand, stand strong when it does.
