Social Wellness:
The Holiday Office Party
By
Mr. Rooney
Workplace Wellness Consultant

Whether attending a formal or informal holiday office party, there are a few things to keep in mind to help us maintain our professionalism and keep us from turning nice into naughty. The holiday office party can be dangerous waters so here are ways to navigate the course and enhance our social wellness at work.

Attend the party– Sounds simple, right? Sometimes it’s who is not there that gets the unapproving nod later during the year. You simply have to make an appearance and be cordial. Believe me, someone will notice that you did not attend.

Dress to the occasion—the office. Be careful of attire that may be frowned upon in a normal business setting. Is the plunging neckline and extremely flashy clothes something you would wear to work? Be festive but don’t give your co-workers something to gossip about.

Go easy. Moderation is the key for eating, drinking, and chatting about negative press. We all have a tendency to take mental notes of over excessiveness. If my 87 year old mother notices over excessiveness at her senior community events, do you think it might happen at the office party?

Network. Introduce yourself to people you do not know, You may find people that you’ve never met at work that can help you with a project or help you land that next promotion. This is a great opportunity to find out about company news from the perspective of others in the workplace.

Use Your Best Manners. Continue to put your best foot forward and lock in a positive reputation for yourself. Be polite and courteous. Others are watching you to evaluate how you act and react outside of the office.

Holiday party’s are meant to be fun and boost morale. Be the example of professionalism and how to “have it all” without being the “talk of the party.”
