Stress Kills The Workplace and Us. Period.
by Sandra Larkin
In the not to
distant past, I experienced extreme health conditions due to
stress. When my doctor told me he was looking for a brain tumor, I
wondered how I got there on his table with a white robe.
Thankfully, the diagnosis was negative. The doctors sternly told me
all of my physical issues were stress and I needed to
drastically change things NOW! ..
Here is some
staggering data.
-
Workplace
stress costs the nation more than $300 billion each year in health
care, missed work and stress reduction efforts.
-
Stress is
responsible for 19 percent of employee absenteeism and 40 percent
of employee turnover.
-
Stress is
responsible for creating 60 percent of the cost of workplace
accidents.
-
Research shows
that 60 to 90 percent of doctor visits are stress-related.
-
A landmark
20-year study conducted by the University of London concluded that
unmanaged reactions to stress were a more dangerous risk factor
for cancer and heart disease than either cigarette smoking or high
cholesterol foods.
-
90 percent of
all disease is caused or complicated by stress.
… and it’s not
getting any better. Our personal and professional lives are
spinning out of control as the workplace and personal demands on our
time increase at rapid rates.
As fall
approaches and kids go back to school, take a personal inventory of
your time and priorities. This includes work as you’ll find you’re
probably taking on “other peoples” responsibilities as well. Don’t
wait for the doctors orders for an MRI. Change one thing per month
and start your journey to a new healthy life.
