Didn't I Just Put Away
The Holiday Decorations?

It seemed like yesterday that I loaded up the holiday decorations in
cardboard boxes that smelled of pine and cinnamon. I distinctly
remember putting them away in storage for the next years holiday
season. Funny how this IS the next year I thought about last season.
Where did time go? The year passed me by. I am, once again, taking
out the holiday decorations for the 2008 season.
In January, I remember thinking that this time next year my
daughter would be in her first semester at college, my husband and I
would be empty nesters and vowed to do more than I had previously in
2007. I hoped that my family members would be healthy and live to
celebrate another Christmas and that I would touch others lives in
healthy ways. Did I accomplish all that I setout to do or did I let
the 2007 holiday season take me on a frenzy journey forgetting to
look forward into another year?
Mark Twain is quoted “ Twenty years from now you will be more
disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you
did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” .
Taking Mr. Twains advice, in what ways can I throw off the
bowlines and sail away from a safe harbor. We become predicable
people as each month of the year gives us traditional ways of living
i.e. February—Valentines Day, March—St. Patrick's Day, April—Easter,
etc…. How can I interject at least one event in 2009 that will
stretch my comfort zone and move me away from a comfortable safe
harbor. Should it be extreme? No. Should it be clever? No. Should it
be reachable? Yes. Maybe I can read 12 new books in one year and cut
down on my TV time. Or, I can volunteer to help those in need in my
community a few times per month. How about decreasing my TV time and
replacing it with more physical activity? Whatever it will be, I
know I can do it because it’s reachable.
As you begin to transform your home into holiday magic, keep in
mind your own safe harbor and how to push away in 2009. By doing so,
you may find a new career, friendships, relationships and, most
importantly, YOURSELF! Have a safe and healthy holiday season!
